Listening Comprehension

BBC World Service

  1. BBC Radio and television News: The BBC News site has excellent radio and television news coverage plus supplementary video recordings and concise texts for reading and listening comprehension.

  2. BBC Listen Again: This is an excellent resource for listening skills development and also for project research.

National Public Radio. You can listen to news stories by simply clicking on the Audio symbol at the end of the text of a news story. You can also order tapes and transcripts for the stories.

British Council Listening Activity: Keys of Sorrow is one of the songs on New Boots, a solo album by Tim van Eyken, winner of the 1998 BBC Young Folk Award.

Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab. Loads of listening documents at all levels (Easy, Medium, Difficult) in a wide variety of topics (e.g. school, likes and dislikes, money, blues, American slang, radio advertising and much more). For each document, you'll find pre-listening, listening, and post-listening activities, as well as some "Listening Quizzes for Academic Purposes" + "Short Listening Exercises".

History Channel's speeches. Click "Speech Archive". For advanced students but provides good resource for teachers.

Listening Quizzes from Kenneth BEARE's About the Internet. Recorded audio files, all levels: Topics: numbers, how much does it cost?, the past tense, likes and dislikes, making plans, vocabulary, Accent Listening Gallery, alphabet, minimal pairs, consonant and vowel pronunciation... Other quizzes organized by categories are also available: Grammar quizzes, Idiom and phrasal verb quizzes, Vocabulary quizzes... ® click "more quizzes" at the bottom of the page. These quizzes are not interactive, so print them out and use as handouts for your classes.

California Distance Learning Project. Listening and reading passages about the following topics: Family (Alzheimer's disease, children and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, crime, skin cancer...), Community (AIDS, Stop Carjacking, Prevent Choking, Walking at Night...), Work (Looking for a Job, Writing a Resume, Welfare to Work...)

Elllo (English Listening Language Lab Online): ELLLO is a free online listening resource of over 1,000 listening activities designed especially for ESL and EFL students and teachers. Most listening activities include images, an interactive quiz, transcript of the audio and downloadable MP3.
